Danny Mills has said that he expects Leeds United to be very active in the transfer market this summer following the departure of defender Pontus Jansson to Brentford.
The Elland Road faithful were disappointed to see the Scandinavian leave the club but the pundit has offered the supporters some solace.
“I would definitely expect Leeds to bring in a new centre-back,” Mills said as reported by Football Insider.
“I’m pretty sure the recruitment team is out there looking already and I’m convinced there will be a new signing in the offing fairly soon. That’s what I’ve been told by Leeds.”
The loss of the Sweden international will no doubt be a blow to Marcelo Bielsa’s team. Jansson had established himself as a key part of the Leeds team during recent years and went on to make more than 120 appearances for the Yorkshire club.
The Whites will be looking to build a side which can improve upon last season and go on and win automatic promotion to the Premier League.
For much of the past season, the Yorkshire giants looked as though they were destined to win promotion to the top-flight.
However, a late season slump in form resulted in Leeds having to settle for a place in the promotion playoffs and they ended up losing their losing their semi-final tie against Derby County.
Jansson is regarded as one of the Championship’s finest defenders – some would argue that he is even good enough to be playing in the Premier League. All of this points to the fact that his departure may have been for non-footballing reasons.
Leeds will now have to secure the services of a replacement which will not be easy. The club recently acquired the services of Ben White on loan but he is arguably not as yet ready to play on a regular basis in the Championship.
