Southampton fans finally saw the side they hoped to see when their team saw off Arsenal 3-2 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, and one man got plenty of praise on Twitter after the match.

Danny Ings scored twice for the Saints in the famous win, as the Ralph Hasenhuttl era got up and running with a bang at St Mary’s Stadium.

It had the feeling of a big afternoon about it for Southampton. There had been no secrets made of the issues Arsenal had defensively ahead of the game, so the match needed someone in an attacking area to take it by the scruff of the neck, and the on loan Liverpool striker did just that.

There was a clear change in emphasis from the Saints under their new Austrian boss. They were more likely, more energetic and pressed much higher up the park, and it had the perfect effect.

Ings put Southampton ahead relatively early in the match when he latched onto a brilliant cross from Matt Targett to power a header home, and then after Arsenal had equalised the forward was at it again.

Shortly before half time another ball in from the flank found the striker in between the two centre backs and he expertly headed the Saints back in front, and although they surrendered the advantage once again, a late Charlie Austin goal was enough to secure all three points and lead the Hampshire outfit out of the relegation zone.

Ings has been a key player since he joined Southampton on loan. His brace against the Gunners means he now has seven goals in all competitions, in just 13 appearances, and if the St Mary’s side are to stay up he will be vital to them.

His goals and his performance were well received by Saints fans on social media, with many pointing out how good he was on the afternoon.
