Aston Villa put up a serious challenge to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon before going down 2-1 late on, and after the match their fans identified a huge positive.

It was a tough one to take for the Villans, who looked on course for three points for so long in the day, only to be denied at the death to leave them dejected.

There were not many judges before the game who expect Villa to get anything from it, and the Birmingham based outfit enjoyed the freedom that brought, but ultimately were left with nothing to show from their efforts other than a bit of pride.

Things looked really good for the Villans, when summer signing Trezeguet gave them a surprise lead 20 minutes into the contest, an advantage they preserved into the break and deep into the second half.

As the 90 minute mark approached, Villa were still leading, but they couldn’t hang on as goals from Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane gave the Premier League leaders a last-gasp win, one which was huge for them, and potentially a hammer blow for Dean Smith and his men.

To the credit of the Villans fans, they showed plenty of love for their side both inside the stadium after the whistle and later on social media, and were clearly proud of their efforts.

One man in particular was singled out for immense praise, and that was the Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba, a player who came of age over the 90 minutes, producing an eye catching display for the Villa.

Plenty of Villans supporters were quick to point out that it was his best performance in a claret and blue shirt, and highlighted just how big an impact he could have for them over the remainder of the campaign.
