Everton picked up a much needed boost to their form on Tuesday evening when they went to Huddersfield Town and came away with a 1-0 victory, but after the match their fans had a few issues with one of their defenders.
The Toffees went into the match with the pressure beginning to mount on them, after an indifferent run of form has seen them drop away from the top seven in the Premier League, and then they were beaten by Championship side Millwall in the FA Cup at the weekend which didn’t help matters either.
Everton got off to the perfect start at the John Smith’s Stadium, when Richarlison broke the deadlock just three minutes into the match, and many were expecting them to go on and dominate the contest from there.
It never really worked out that way, and in the end they were made to cling on for their victory after second half substitute Lucas Digne was dismissed just over 10 minutes after he replaced Leighton Baines.
It has not been the best of weeks for the France international so far. He was guilty of giving away two soft free kicks which Millwall scored from on Saturday, and then the Everton full-back saw red at Huddersfield when denying a goalscoring opportunity.
While Toffees supporters were aware that he may well have saved two points with the tackle, many of them can’t help but notice the sudden poor form of the former Barcelona defender.
Digne now faces a suspension and with the other option at left-back for Everton, in the form of Leighton Baines, looking like being out injured, Marco Silva could have a dilemma at the weekend.
Toffees fans reacted to the sending off, and the drop in form of the defender, when they reacted on social media after the match.
Here are some of their messages:
Shout out to Digne for taking one for the team. Need them all to have same mentality #EFC

Tactical red card for Digne for me, had to make a challenge and it paid off. Let’s hope the Injury to Baines isn’t serious. #EFC

Important win given the circumstances.Keane was brilliant alongside Zouma who also did well. Davies added some energy and Tosun held the ball up well at times. Gutted to see Baines go off injured. Digne needs to cut out the mistakes. Pickford with some big saves when needed #EFC

Shaky at best @Everton win. Pickford, Keane, Davies very solid. Digne idiotic defensive effort + red, Bernard’s effectiveness has continued to diminish all season. Still need major changes… but a win is a win. #EFC #EFCawayday

I thought at the time it was silly for Digne to bring him down and get a red. But If he runs through and bags that we certainly wouldnt have won that game. #EFC

Haven’t seen Digne’s sending off so don’t know how bad it was, but it does raise questions ahead of our next game.
Baines off injured and Digne suspended. Possibly Kenny at left-back? #efc

Digne sent off after being on the pitch for just 11 minutes. Killed us. #EFC
