When Bob Gaudio wrote the lyrics to December 1963 (Oh What a Night), for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, or Clock for those of a younger generation, to perform, he clearly didn’t mean the Town’s win over Portsmouth last Tuesday, but he so very well could have done.
What a night it was. It was one of those throwback Kenilworth Road evenings, the likes of which we have experienced many times and which will be sorely missed when we depart our home for the new one at Power Court.
It was impossible to ignore the potential significance of the contest heading into it. Victory would put Luton five points clear at the top of the League One table, defeat would have had us a point behind Portsmouth, who would have had a game in hand to extend that.
I can’t lie and say I wasn’t nervous walking up to the ground. It was an exciting set of nerves as much as a tense one because I was really looking forward to the game, but seeing the snow pouring down I feared the match would become an aerial battle, which may have suited our opponents more than us.
How wrong I was! What actually happened was the Town produced the best 45 minutes I’ve had the pleasure to watch from them in the first half, and while Portsmouth made a game of it after the break, the character of our team shone to the fore and we ran out totally deserved winners on what was to become another memorable evening under the lights at Kenilworth Road.
We’ve since brought in three additions to the squad, and followed up that epic win over Portsmouth with a controlled victory at Shrewsbury on Saturday. Equally as importantly we have kept hold of all of our star assets in the squad.
January was meant to be a tough month for the Town. A period where we would find out just how serious we are as promotion contenders. Despite losing our manager, we have picked up four wins and two draws in 2019 to move six points clear at the top.
We all now know our credentials with regards to going up, and more importantly the clubs around us in the table are aware of them as well.
Luton Town are going to be promoted this season. The last 15 matches are going to be a promotion party all of their own and I can’t wait for them to start!
