Glasgow Rangers players are under real pressure to win in Austria, to qualify for the last 32 of the Europa Cup against Rapid Vienna.
Three points is enough to get through, but the team have to perform much better than the Light Blues have in the last two disastrous league games.
The Teddy Bears went from heroes to zeroes in one sad week.
From a good, battling 2-1 performance against Hearts to an average 1-0 loss to Aberdeen at Ibrox, Rangers had a complete 1-1 bummer against 10 man, bottom club up in Dundee.
But for a desperately poor assistant referee’s decision, Kyle Lafferty’s Rangers would have won 2-1 and be sitting at the top of the league.
It would have been his first goal for a while and with his confidence renewed, Rangers could have gone on to score even more.
The last 32 Europa game means so much to Rangers and the big problem seems to be that some of the players don’t seem to be able to play at their best when they are under severe pressure.
The extra money will be vital for Steven Gerrard to finance some new recruits from the January transfer window.
Gerrard needs two or three quality players who are superior than he presently has at his disposal.
The boss has lost two very good players in midfielder Graham Dorrans and winger Jamie Murphy, unfortunately on long-term injuries.
Gerrard doesn’t seem to rate ex-captain and left back Lee Wallace, plus young Ross McCrorie and is still nursing young Jordan Rossiter back to full fitness after his dire injury history.
Umar Sadiq has been a major disappointment and Nikola Katic’s nose seems out of joint at the moment.
The fans can’t stand Jon Flanagan at left back and don’t rate Ovie Ejaria in midfield, whose stats don’t stack up, because he doesn’t contribute enough to the team.
The jury is still out regarding Lassana Coulibaly, who was terrific at the start of his Rangers career, but his recent form is abysmal by comparison.
The fans are not convinced with centre half Joe Worrall. His distribution is poor and the fans much prefer Croatian Katic to replace him – now!
James Tavernier is at times a dreadful defender, poor in the air and unaware of his surroundings. He costs Rangers goals, so sell him or move him to wing-back.
Connor Goldson is also out of form and his confidence seems very low at this present time. Fans are starting to glamour for him to be rested.
My team to qualify for the last 32 – in a 3- 2 – 4 -1 line-up:
McGregor: Katic, Goldson, McAuley: Jack, Coulibaly: Tavernier, Arfield, Grezda, Barisic: Morelos
Subs: Middleton, Lafferty, Candeias, Halliday, McCrorie, Ejaria and Foderingham
