Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have confirmed they have appointed Michael Edwards as their new chief executive of football.
The 44-year-old previously worked as the Reds’ sporting director but has returned to Anfield “in a role with greater seniority than he held previously and with a wider remit.”
Edwards had received numerous offers since leaving the Merseyside club in 2022, including Manchester United and Chelsea.
And though the English football expert initially rejected an approach from FSG, he was persuaded to take up the new role after face-to-face talks with the Reds’ owners.
FSG president Mike Gordon said (as per BBC Sport): “Michael is one of the most formidable executive talents in world football.
“He returns to us in a role with greater seniority than he held previously and with a wider remit.
“It was clear when we initially reached out to him that a broader scope would be a key motivating factor for any potential return to the industry. In this regard – and many others – his ambitions matched ours.”
Liverpool fans were shocked when Jurgen Klopp announced he will step down as manager at the end of the campaign.
However, they will be happy to see the team is doing their best to make the German’s final season very memorable.
Klopp’s men beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final last month, with Virgil van Dijk scoring the winner in extra-time.
The Reds are also alive in the FA Cup and the Europa League, while they are in a fierce Premier League title race with Manchester City and Arsenal.
The Merseyside giants held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Sunday and are currently level on points with the Gunners.
Liverpool’s remaining fixtures this season will see them take on difficult opponents like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
If they don’t drop any points in these games, they are likely to win the Premier League title.
