Nottingham Forest fans took to Twitter last night after their team’s narrow EFL Cup first round win over Shrewsbury Town, registering their delight at new striker Jason Cummings’ goalscoring debut.

Manager Mark Warburton made eleven changes from his side’s 1-0 opening day Championship victory over Millwall last Friday and handed debuts to the 22-year-old and former Olympiakos midfielder Andreas Bouchalakis.

Forest eventually laboured to a 2-1 victory against the League 1 side at the City Ground but the performance of their new striker provided them with much cause for optimism for the season ahead.

Cummings marked an impressive debut by firing in the Reds’ second goal, finishing powerfully after latching on to Mustapha Carayol’s through-ball to make it 2-0 in the 75th minute.

That proved to be the winner as despite a late Shaun Whalley goal from the penalty spot, the Shrews failed to find the equaliser and the Championship side hung on to move into the second round.

The 22-year-old’s goal was richly deserved after a display that oozed energy and dynamism. Cummings was bright throughout and threatened Shrews goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s goal on numerous occasions, including a memorable rasping long-range strike that clipped the cross bar in the first half.

The Scottish striker’s movement and clever runs in behind stretched and caused problems for the visitors’ defence all game.

Cummings moved to the City Ground from Hibernian for a reported £1 million fee in June and arrives with a burgeoning reputation. He carved out an impressive scoring record at Easter Road, netting 55 goals in 114 games and looks capable of replicating that form in the English second tier.

Forest return to league action this weekend, travelling to take on Brentford at Griffin Park on Saturday and it will be interesting to see if Cummings has forced his way into Warburton’s plans and earned a first-team place.

If he can reproduce last night’s performance consistently, it is surely a matter of time before the Scot becomes a regular feature in the starting XI.
