Portsmouth travellend to Doncaster Rovers today and recorded their first win of 2011 coutesy of goals either side of the interval from Dave Kitson and Joel Ward. Doncaster have now lost six out of their last seven games, and are in danger of being dragged back into a relegation battle; the win gives Pompey a bit of breathing space and moves them within five points of the team they have just beaten.

Portsmouth got out of the blocks the quickest and Irish midfielder Liam Lawrence could have given the visitors the lead early on, but was denied by Doncaster keeper Gary Woods from close range. Doncaster’s forged a cutting edge chance of their own at the other end, which fell to James Coppinger, but the midfielder wasted a great opportunity to put Donny in front. Coppinger did well to cut in from the left and hold off two Portsmouth defenders, but an off balanced effort failed to trouble keeper Jamie Ashdown. Coppinger was made to rue his miss soon after, as Dave Kitson headed Pompey into the lead three minutes before the break. Greg Halford’s shot looked to be nestling in the corner of the Doncaster net, but struck the post; Kitson reacted fastest to head the visitors into a 1-0 half time lead.

Steve Cotterill’s men doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half, with Joel Ward’s neat finish; Ward capitalised on a David Nugent flick-on to delicately lift the ball over Doncaster keeper Woods and give the travelling fans something to sing about. To Doncaster’s credit they attacked Pompey after finding themselves two goals down, but they struggled to create any real scoring opportunities. The visitors held on to record a clean sheet, even after the dismissal of Jonathan Hogg close to the end for a second bookable offence.

Doncaster manager Sean O’Driscoll will know that results will have to improve if they are to avoid a stressful end of season run-in, whilst three points will do much to lift the spirits of Portsmouth’s players and fans alike
