Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has deleted his Twitter account following criticism from fans after his performance on Saturday.

The Geordie faithful took to Twitter to bemoan and criticise their team after a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

The Magpies had 18 shots in the game but needed the help of Villa captain Tommy Elphick, who put through his own net, to take the lead.

Aaron Tshibola equalised with two minutes to go as Sels was beaten too easily at his near post.

And it was the Belgian goalkeeper who took the brunt of the fans criticism, with many claiming Karl Darlow should be the main man in between the sticks.

The majority of fans have quickly jumped to the former KAA Gent goalkeeper’s defence however, claiming the abuse he has received online is nothing short of shameful.

What remains to be seen is whether Rafael Benitez will stick with the goalkeeper for Wednesday’s crucial home game with promotion rivals Norwich City.
