West Ham United nearly clawed a point from their fixture with Southampton on Saturday, however, the Hammers fell short at the last hurdle, whilst Michail Antonio made his first start of the season.

The Saints took the lead 10 minutes into the match with an effort from Manolo Gabbiadini going past Joe Hart, before Marko Arnautovic saw red.

The Hammers’ record-signing was sent off for elbowing Jack Stephens after he felt he was on the receiving end of one from debutant Mario Lemina, however, referee Lee Mason gave the West Ham attacker his marching orders.

Dusan Tadic then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot before Javier Hernandez grabbed one back before half-time.

The Mexican also netted his second for West Ham late on in the second-half, which made it look likely that both sides would end with a share of the points.

However, a late penalty from Charlie Austin saw the hosts grab all three points late in stoppage time.

The Irons have had a difficult start to life in the Premier League this year, having been beaten by Manchester United 4-0 on the opening weekend, before the defeat to the Saints.

West Ham fans, despite the result, were pleased to see one of their main men back in the starting line-up as Antonio recovered from his long layoff.

The winger, who has been used all across the park by Slaven Bilic in previous starting formations, had missed the last six weeks of last season, before spending the whole of the summer continuing his rehabilitation programme.

The Hammers faithful took to social media to show their delight for the 27-year-old’s return and believed he had made an impact on the whole team.

  1. Chicharito got much of the kudos for scoring the 2 goals and his general high energy performance..
That said, it was wonderful to see our great champion, Michail Antonio, put in such a terrific effort for his first game back.
Set up the first goal with a lovely left-footed drive, and made some outstanding long sprints, leaving defenders in their wake; won a lot of headers, and played his guts out.
can’t wait till Lanzini and the big Cheikh come back, but Bilic must stop using the 4-2-3-1 formation!! It does not work with this group of players; if he used a 3-5-2, a 4-4-2, or even a 3-4-3, we would be much stronger in midfield and also adding goal-scoring chances with an extra striker. Chicharito is a great goal poacher, but not so good as a lone-wolf predator like Ronaldo or Lukaku!
