Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has expressed his concern for Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen by saying the playmaker “looks exhausted”.
Speaking ahead of Spurs’ Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, Redknapp suggested that it is no coincidence that Eriksen’s loss of form has resulted in a downturn of results for the north London side.
Tottenham have suffered defeats to Burnley and Chelsea in their last three matches and escaped with a draw on Saturday against rivals Arsenal when goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saved an injury-time penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
While Spurs stepped up and beat Dortmund 1-0 in midweek, Eriksen again struggled to make a big impact on the game.
“Christian Eriksen looks exhausted and, without Harry Winks against Arsenal, they were unable to control the midfield,” the former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
Tottenham have failed to win a domestic game since that night in February and have lost ground in the race for the Premier League title as a result.
The loss of form has seen Spurs slip ten points adrift of league leaders Manchester City and nine away from second-place Liverpool.
Manchester United are also breathing down their necks after their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Red Devils are now just three points behind Tottenham.
Eriksen is clearly a key man for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and without him firing on all cylinders, the team can lack creativity.
Much has been made of the Danish midfielder’s contract situation, with the playmaker entering the last 12 months of his Tottenham deal from this summer.
