Schalke have announced that they have dropped former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb from their side for “disciplinary” reasons, according to a report published on the German club’s official website.
The Algerian international joined Spurs in 2012 as a youth player from Dunkerque. After graduating to the first-team of the Lilywhites, he went on to 46 Premier League appearances for the Tottenham side.
He left the club initially on loan in 2016 to join Schalke amidst reports of attitude issues. He joined the Bundesliga club the following year in 2017 on a four-year contract.
Prior to his departure from Spurs, he was also banished from the first-team. Bentaleb did not play for his current side during their 1-0 defeat against RB Leipzig on Saturday and is reportedly also carrying an injury.
The latest news certainly proves that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was correct to sell the player due to his attitude issues. Bentaleb’s attitude issues also seem to be hindering his international career.
He was not called up for Algeria’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia on 22 March. His country have already secured qualification to the next African Cup of Nations which is set to take place in Egypt next year.
Bentaleb has been a first-team regular for Schalke this season as he has gone on to so far make 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals.
His club has however been rather poor by their standings. They currently lie in 15th position on the Bundesliga standings with just 23 points after 26 matches. They are a massive 37-points adrift of League leaders Bayern Munich.
Tottenham fans will be happy that Pochettino opted to sell the player, as Spurs have much superior options in the heart of their midfield currently.
