Despite scoring 41 league goals in 96 appearances at Besiktas, Cenk Tosun had so far been failing to live up to his lavish £27 million price-tag and was benched not long after joining Everton in January.
However, recently he cannot stop scoring and rounded off a three-game scoring streak with a brace on a cold afternoon in the North-West’s answer to Mesopotamia. So what has changed?
According to the Liverpool Echo, Sam Allardyce points to a recent warm weather training sojourn in Dubai as the reason for Tosun’s recent form.
To escape the miserable weather (and perhaps general atmosphere) in Merseyside, the Toffees jetted off to sunny Dubai, thus giving the Everton striker the opportunity to shine.
This trip gave him a chance to get out of the firing line and to get to know the players more in a different setting.
“He’s always had finishing in his locker – he seems to be born with that instinct of where to be,” Allardyce has stated.
There is no doubt that Tosun initially struggling to adapt to both the weather and the lack of a winter break which he previously benefited from in Turkey, but if his recent form is anything to go by, his adaptation may be just about complete.
Everton fans will be hoping that Allardyce’s words hold some truth and that Tosun really has turned a corner.
They do not need to be reminded of previous one hit-wonders such as Sandro Ramirez, who managed just one goal against Atalanta in the Europa league before being sent out on loan to Sevilla for rest of the season in the January transfer window.
Thanks to Tosun’s heroics though, Everton currently sit ninth in the table and are just three points behind seventh-placed Burnley – their chance at Europa League qualification isn’t gone just yet.
