Everton make the long trip to Wales to take on Cardiff City in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, and it could be that they have a couple of defenders available to them.
The Toffees have had a lengthy period without a match having not played at the weekend. They were not involved the week before that either as they had already been knocked out of the FA Cup, so it is 17 days since they were last in action.
Their previous outing saw them lose 1-0 at Watford, and that was a fifth defeat in six matches in all competitions for Everton, a run they desperately need to end at the Cardiff City Stadium.
They might be getting the Welsh outfit at the right time though, after they took a battering at the hands of the Hornets on Friday night, so the Toffees would look to have a good chance of picking up the three points.
One thing which might help Everton in their quest is the potential availability of defenders Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines. The lengthy gap between matches has afforded Marco Silva the opportunity to get the pair back in training.
He provided an update on the Toffees’ pair when he addressed the media, prior to his team departing for the Welsh capital.
“Phil has been back working since the start of the break,” The Everton official website quotes him as saying.
“Leighton, too, has been back but is a little bit doubtful [for Cardiff].
“He has worked with us for the last two days and will be monitored. We have one more session so we will see how he is and I will make my decision.”
One man who Silva will definitely have to do without in Cardiff is defender Kurt Zouma. The Chelsea loanee will miss out for Everton due to suspension.
