‘Different level’ – Some Spurs fans salute ‘top drawer’ midfielder in CL loss

Tottenham Hotspur fans saw their side go down 1-0 to Red Bull Leipzig in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night, but they found a positive to take to Germany for the second leg with them.

Spurs were pretty ordinary on the night it has to be said, set up to avoid defeat in the main, in the absence of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, two key components of their attacking play.

It soon became apparent that this was going to be a long exercise for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham side, with their opponents popping the ball about as if they were the home team, hitting the woodwork early, and calling Hugo Lloris into a number of crucial saves, which turned out to keep the tie alive.

Spurs’ task in Germany became a lot harder in the second half however, as Ben Davies clumsily gave away a penalty, which even the French stopper couldn’t keep out, as Timo Werner justified his lofty reputation to fire home.

That left Tottenham searching for an equaliser to go into the reverse leg all-square in the tie, but try as they might they could not level the scores, and have it all to do in the away game in Leipzig next month.

Spurs fans needed a crumb of comfort to take forward with them, and they found it in the classy Argentina international Giovani Lo Celso.

This was another positive performance from the Tottenham playmaker, with him creating a number of openings, which his teammates were unfortunately unable to convert which would have given them a better foothold in the tie.

Many Spurs fans recognised the contribution of their recent signing when they reflected on the disappointing evening on Twitter after the final whistle, with the 23-year-old singled out for praise.

Here are the pick of their messages:
