Derby County returned to winning ways in the Championship on Friday night with a resounding 5-0 victory over Hull City at Pride Park.

A blistering first-half performance put Gary Rowett’s side four goals up by the interval, with Matej Vydra bagging a brace, before being joined on the scoresheet by Curtis Davies and Bradley Johnson, who went on to net his second and his side’s fifth mid-way through the second period.

Summer signing Tom Lawrence, making his first start for the Rams since joining from Leicester City in a £5 million deal last month, was particularly impressive, despite giving away a first-half penalty.

The 23-year-old, who featured in Wales’ 1-0 victory over Austria last week, had come off the bench in Derby’s previous two league fixtures but rewarded Rowett’s faith in him by grabbing two assists and putting in an eye-catching performance.

After moving to the King Power Stadium back in 2014, Lawrence endured something of a nomadic few years, going out on loan to four different clubs, managing to make just four appearances for Leicester in all competitions.

The former Manchester United man made the most of his temporary switch to Ipswich Town last campaign, scoring 11 goals in 36 appearances for the Tractor Boys before making the switch to Pride Park.

Having made such a positive start to his time with the Rams, the Derby faithful will be hoping that Lawrence will prove to be a more than able replacement for departed winger Tom Ince and help guide the side to promotion back to the top flight.
