Football pundit Dean Ashton has commented on the transfer debacle involving Swansea City player Daniel James.
“I think why this is difficult is because from the sounds of things it was a Swansea issue than Leeds,” Ashton told Football League World.
“It depends whether he has got any resentment to Swansea because of that but hopefully he’s got the right attitude and advice and he gets his head down and just carries on what he has been doing where he’s got to the point where someone wants to buy him.
“He’s young enough and I think that’s key because it’s not as if this was the last chance saloon of getting a move and moving to a team that could get promoted.
“He’s used to Swansea and he’s used to how they play so hopefully he can settle back in and that’s where Graham Potter has to come in and make sure he’s mentally right.”
The 21-year-old was expected by many to join Leeds United during last month’s transfer window and even reportedly had a medical at Elland Road. However, the Swans pulled out of a potential deal at the last minute.
The Welsh outfit are now reportedly hopeful that the player will remain with them beyond the expiration of his current contract which is set to end next summer according to Transfermarkt.
It is easy to see why James may have been wanting to join Leeds. Marcelo Bielsa’s side look set to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League this season and make a return to the top-flight for the first time since 2004.
Swansea meanwhile have been very inconsistent in the Championship this season. Though they do have an outside chance of winning a place in the promotion playoffs, it will be surprising if they do manage to win promotion.
James is likely to not be exactly impressed with his current club based on the fact that they pulled out of a deal at the last minute which would have likely caused him a great deal of inconvenience as well as irritation.
It may have also been a very foolish move from the Swans. They could now be set to lose the player for nothing at the end of the season on a free transfer.
It remains to be seen if James will decide to stick with the club after this but it will be surprising if he does. He is a very talented player and will not be short of new offers come the end of the season.
