Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Scott Dann and Connor Wickham are available when his side face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, but Christian Benteke remains out.
The match is a big one for the Eagles, who slowly but surely are dropping further towards the relegation zone, and sitting above the drop on just goal difference heading into a contest against the side occupying the final spot in the bottom three.
Palace have won just one of their last 11 matches, but to be fair to them their last five have all been against sides in the top seven in the table, so the fixtures have not been kind to them.
The Eagles are still searching for their first win in front of their own fans this term, and they will be eager to get it and take advantage of a softening in their schedule at long last.
As they go for that elusive victory, Hodgson will be delighted to have Dann and Wickham to call upon for his Palace side, with the defender likely to be of particular use to the former England boss given Burnley’s direct style of play.
The Eagles manager pointed out that both men would be available to him, when he addressed the media as usual ahead of the game.
“Scott and Connor can both play, they’ve been in training all week.” The Crystal Palace official website quotes him as saying.
“Both are making good strides. Both have been out of top-class competitive football for some time. Connor is now back, I think it might be his first full week, but Scott has been training with us for the past two or three weeks.”
Hodgson also confirmed that Palace striker Benteke remains on the sidelines, although there appears to be some light at the end of a frustrating injury tunnel for the Belgian forward.
“We don’t have any injuries other than the one to Christian, which everyone knows about. He’s making very good progress so we’re happy with that. Fortunately, everyone else can be considered.”
“We don’t think Christian’s return is months away, [it’s] more like weeks.”
