Crystal Palace have been handed a major blow in their bid to avoid relegation to the Championship with the news that key man Wilfried Zaha could be out of action for a prolonged period of time with a knee injury, according to the Guardian.

It is understood that the 25-year-old picked up the injury during the first half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United yet remained on the pitch, completing the entire 90 minutes.

After being sent for a scan on Monday, the Ivory Coast international was told that he must go for more treatment in order to get a better idea of the gravity of the injury.

Palace, who have improved significantly since the appointment of Roy Hodgson as manager, are expected to be without Zaha for a minimum of four weeks, although there are fears that the talismanic winger could be ruled out for a significantly longer period.

The former Manchester United man already missed two months of action at the start of the campaign after picking up a knee injury during the Eagles’ curtain-raiser against Huddersfield Town and has played a key role in Palace’s revival since then.

Sunday’s draw with fellow strugglers Newcastle saw the London outfit drop down one place into 14th spot in the league table and Palace currently find themselves just three points above the relegation zone.

News of Zaha’s injury is made worse by the fact that, just last week, the Eagles’ top scorer Bakary Sako, who has six strikes to his name in all competitions, was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a fractured ankle and damaged ligaments.

The Palace faithful have taken to Twitter to air their dismay at Zaha’s spell on the sidelines, as the Eagles are set to face a number of tough fixtures in the next weeks without the tricky winger.
