Derby County fell at the final hurdle in their quest for Premier League football on Monday when they were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa.

In front of a packed out Wembley Stadium, the Rams found themselves behind just minutes before the half-time whistle when Anwar El Ghazi opened the scoring with a header at the back post.

They saw the deficit doubled on the hour mark when Kelle Roos made a howler and did not deal with the ball.

The Dutch goalkeeper, who tasted promotion via the play-offs with AFC Wimbledon once before, came for the ball, however, he saw it come off of John McGinn and go into an empty net.

Derby did get back into the game when Martyn Waghorn got the slightest of touches on Jack Marriott’s shot and scored with just ten minutes left on the clock.

Seven minutes of injury time was not enough for Frank Lampard’s side to find the equaliser and will now have to prepare for another tough campaign in the Championship.

Fans were proud of their players on the day for their performance, as they were throughout the season, however, many were not happy with one of the manager’s decisions when it counted the most.

Plenty of them took to Twitter to criticism and question why Lampard had not selected Marriott from the beginning of the game.

Many had felt that the striker had deserved a place following his heroics against Leeds United in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

Here are just some of their reactions:
