Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu made his competitive debut for Wales in their 4-1 UEFA Nations League win over Republic of Ireland on Thursday evening, and their fans were impressed with what they saw.

They had every right to as well, as the young superstar took to the contest like a duck to water as he starred in the holding position in the centre of the park.

The midfielder, who Chelsea signed from Exeter City in July last year, was surprisingly picked ahead of Joe Ledley by Ryan Giggs for the Nations League opener, and he rewarded the faith shown in him with a performance beyond his years.

Ampadu does not turn 18 until next Friday but you would not have thought that, as the youngster made a big impact on the emphatic 4-1 win.

He was always available for the ball and used it wisely, and when he had to show his physical side he did that too. He also regularly broke up play, and on one such occurrence he went on to set up the third goal for Wales which was converted by Aaron Ramsey.

The 17-year-old had looked like he had been playing at international level for years. It was a performance that made a lot of people stand up and take notice.

He will hope that one of those is his club manager Maurizio Sarri, who is yet to use him this term. The seven appearances the Welshman has made for Chelsea in all competitions all came last season.

Many more performances like the one he gave at the Cardiff City Stadium will force the Italian to pick him for the Blues, and judging by their response to the display of the youngster on social media, the Stamford Bridge followers will be keen to see the midfielder playing for them more often.
