The Glasgow Rangers faithful are currently enjoying the ‘bragging rights’ of beating Celtic 1-0 before the winter break, with the race for the league title set to heat up.
The Gers have not rested on their laurels and looked to strengthen, with Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis moving to the Ibrox outfit.
Champions Celtic have been less convincing in their transfer business and legend Charlie Nicholas has questioned Brendan Rodgers’ signings.
“Where does Oli Burke fit in for the Hoops? He’s not smart enough to lead the line,” the former Hoop wrote in his weekly column for the Daily Star.
“He’s energetic and fast but will he replace James Forrest or Scott Sinclair on the wing?
“Celtic’s recruitment in recent times has been baffling. Youssouf Mulumbu and Lewis Morgan were odd summer signings.
“The lack of defensive cover is shocking. What is the plan if Dedryck Boyata is lured away or the turmoil at Leicester ends with a new boss recalling Filip Benkovic?
I have been in Charlie’s company on many occasions and can testify, that although he is a genuine Celtic fan, he always gives his honest opinions.
He never says anything just to annoy the Hoops supporters, but he wants the board to know exactly what he really thinks – he is not a Celtic yes man.
This of course is what Rangers fans want to hear, as they look forward to watching the quality of Defoe, Alfredo Morelos and Davis in a new-look attack.
Could Rodgers’ role at Celtic be under threat if he does not retain the league title?
If Celtic lose the league to Rangers and don’t win the Scottish Cup, then Kilmarnock will do well to hold on to their terrific manager Steve Clarke, in my opinion.
The Hoops fans will question the board, but they are more inclined to hold the signing policy of their manager more accountable for not winning – and I predict that they will want him replaced.
