Glasgow Celtic have missed out on Manchester City defender Jason Denayer, who has joined French club Lyon, they have confirmed.
The Belgium international had been a reported target for the Bhoys this summer with boss Brendan Rodgers looking to strengthen his backline.
However Denayer, who has previously spent time on loan at the SPL champions, will snub any chance of a return to Celtic by signing with the Ligue 1 outfit for a fee of €10 million (£9 million).
The news comes just days after Rodgers was spotted at the Etihad Stadium, fuelling speculation that a move for the former Hoops man was rife.
Celtic are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements following a turbulent start to the season that has already seen a domestic defeat to Hearts and a Champions League exit at the hands of Greek outfit AEK Athens.
The situation hasn’t been helped by defender Dedryck Boyata – an international teammate of Denayer – refusing to play after a transfer was turned down back to the Premier League.
While few would still be foolish enough to bet against Celtic retaining the league title this season, there certainly are cracks beginning to show in a unit that looked impenetrable in times last season.
Rodgers seems wise to that fact, however – and will no doubt be keen to press on with other targets before the transfer window closes.
