Glasgow Rangers confirmed on Wednesday that their summer business had started, with veteran Portuguese centre-half Bruno Alves signing a two-year deal with the Ibrox club.

Pedro Caixinha is set to revamp the Gers squad this summer and a number of new defenders are believed to be on the manager’s hitlist.

Alves brings a wealth of top-level club and international experience to Rangers and is expected to be something of a talisman in the Ibrox dressing room.

However, Celtic fans are not shaking in their boots at the defender’s arrival in Scotland, even as the Portugal international states he has signed for the Glasgow side to win trophies.

With Alves in the twilight years of his playing career and turning 36 in November, the Bhoys supporters have questioned the logic of landing a veteran on a two-year deal.

The Celtic fans were also quick to point out the Portuguese enforcer’s lack of pace, with the Parkhead faithful pointing out that the likes of sprightly forward Moussa Dembele would look forward to facing him.
