Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is believed to be closing in on a club-record £20 million deal for Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron, according to BBC Sport.
The Paraguayan star is believed to be travelling to the UK for his medical ahead of an impending transfer to the Tyneside outfit.
Almiron is a box-to-box midfielder and a fans favourite at Atlanta, while he has at times been used as a second forward.
He has dynamic pace, with good technical ability and an eye for a pass.
The news will come as music to the ears of Newcastle fans, who have been desperate for club owner Mike Ashley to open his chequebook in the January window.
Benitez is clearly a fan of Almiron given previous links between the Magpies and the player, with the impending transfer also keeping the Spanish manager happy.
Newcastle have given their chances of avoiding a Premier League relegation scrap a real boost in recent weeks, with improved form culminating in a shock 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
If the Tyneside outfit can add another player or two to their squad before Thursday’s transfer window closes, it will give the north east club a fighting chance of finishing towards mid-table.
Almiron’s addition would add creativity and energy to Newcastle options in the final third and be a welcome boost to a side that has looked one-dimensional on the front foot at times this season.
