Noel Whelan has suggested to Football Insider that Leeds United should make a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.
The former Leeds striker, who now works as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, believes that the Championship club should make a loan move for the 29-year-old striker.
Whelan told Football Insider about Gayle: “I’m thinking a loan deal for someone like Dwight Gayle.
“He’d be perfect for us, a proven striker who could well be available and who has a brilliant record in the Championship.
“I can see him joining. We would just have to match his Newcastle wages, which Leeds probably wouldn’t be able to afford without new investment. That’s the reality.”
Proven Championship goalscorer
Gayle may have struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, but the former Crystal Palace striker is a proven goalscorer in the Championship.
The striker has scored a lot of goals in the second tier of English football for Newcastle and for West Bromwich Albion.
According to WhoScored, the 29-year-old made 34 starts and six substitute appearances in the Championship during his loan spell at West Brom last season, scoring 24 goals and providing two assists in the process.
Back in the 2016-17 campaign, Gayle made 26 starts and six substitute appearances in the Championship for Newcastle, scoring 23 goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
With Leeds aiming to finish in the top two of the Championship table this season, Gayle would be a good signing on loan for Leeds.
