BBC pundit thinks Leeds United have made a mistake

Noel Whelan has suggested to Football Insider that Leeds United made a mistake signing Jean-Kevin Augustin in the January transfer window.

The former Leeds striker does not think that Augustin will be at his best between now and the end of the season.

Augustin joined Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window after terminating a loan spell at AS Monaco.

The 22-year-old striker has played just 49 minutes in the Championship for the Whites so far this season, according to WhoScored, and is injured at the moment.

Whelan told Football Insider about Augustin: “You’ve got Augustin who’s a week, maybe two away with a hamstring injury.

“He’s never been fit since he came to Leeds so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s injured – I said it all along, if you push him too hard.

“He was the wrong signing at the time, he really was. He wasn’t going to contribute too much to us because the other players have gone through eight to ten weeks of pre-season.

“What will we see of him? He’ll have to start again because his match fitness is going to go back down again now he’s been injured for two or three weeks.

“We’re not going to see the best of him and I very much doubt he’s going to contribute that much, quite honestly.”

Matching on

Leeds, though, are not missing Augustin, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side continue their march towards automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The win against Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire derby on Saturday afternoon was the Whites’ fifth in a row without conceding.

Leeds are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 71 points from 37 matches, a point clear of West Bromwich Albion, who are currently second in the standings and occupy the final automatic promotion spot.
