Barcelona cult figures Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique have both stated that they believe Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with the Catalan giants.
The Argentina international’s current deal expires in 2018 and there have been rumours in the Spanish press that the South American has put talks over an extension on hold.

This has led to speculation that the current Ballon d’Or holder could leave his boyhood club, with some of Europe’s richest clubs supposedly clambering to steal him away from Camp Nou.
Messi continues to be the attacking talisman behind Barcelona’s success, with the Catalan club desperate for their star man to pen a new deal.
Puyol has stated that he feels that it is only a matter of time before the Argentine superstar puts pen to paper on a new deal with the La Liga champions.
“I think that Messi will renew,” Puyol told La Vanguardia.
“Barcelona is the best place for him, his home, we all love him.”
Current team-mate Pique mirrored Puyol’s sentiments by stating that he feels that Messi is committed to the Camp Nou outfit.
“Messi knows that he won’t be better somewhere other than here,” he said.
The Argentine star is favourite to retain his Ballon d’Or accolade at the end of the year but aces competition from perennial rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
