Barcelona have moved ahead of Everton in the race for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez, according to The Sun.

The 20-year-old chose the Dutch team over the Catalans last summer after finding out he wouldn’t be played in the same team as the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

He moved from Atletico Nacional for £4.2 million, however Barca are expected to land the Colombian at their second attempt.

Toffees manager Ronald Koeman was hoping his Dutch connections could help him sign the player ahead of the Catalan side.

One factor which has blocked Sanchez’s potential move to the Premier League is not being able to get a work permit.

“Barca are lucky because otherwise Davinson Sanchez would already be playing at Everton under the orders of Ronald Koeman, who is enthusiastic about the boy,” Ajax coach Tonny Bruins said.

“He has personally confirmed this to me on several occasions.”

Everton are still looking into signing Dutch midfielder Axel Witsel, according to reports.

The Blues were interested in him over the summer, however he stayed at Russian club Zenit St Petersburg to see out most of the rest of his current contract, which runs out in the summer.

Juventus are said to be interested in the Belgian, but if they fail with their final offer then that could be the green light for Everton to land the player.
