Aston Villa have rewarded goalkeeper Jed Steer with a new contract due to his heroics in the Championship promotion playoffs, the newly promoted club have confirmed on their official website.
There has been uncertainty around the stopper’s future as the Villans have been strongly linked with a move for Jack Butland of Stoke City.
Reported Villa target Butland has vast experience playing in the Premier League and continues to be called up for England national team duty as cover for Jordan Pickford.
He will likely be keen on a potential move to Villa as he needs to be playing in the Premier League if he wants to stand a chance of usurping Pickford in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.
Steer spent the early part of last season on loan with Charlton Athletic but was recalled by Villa following an injury to Lovre Kalinic.
He made the most of the opportunities that were given to him and arguably did enough to be included in the club’s first-team plans for next season.
Steer’s best performance in a Villa jersey came via his heroics for the club during the promotion playoff semi-finals.
He would be a good number two for Villa. If they do manage to sign Butland, he would be able to provide the Englishman with strong competition and keep him on his toes.
In spite of Villa being promoted, they still need to strengthen their side to be competitive in the Premier League next season.
Unfortunately, this could involve some rather harsh decisions such as having to rid Steer of the first-choice goalkeeping position.
