Aston Villa have become the latest club to register an interest in signing Mainz 05 attacking midfielder Erkin Eyibil, according to the Turkish Football website.
The 17-year-old has scored 15 goals in 19 appearances for his club’s Under-19 side this season, performances which have attracted attention from elsewhere.
Reported Villa target Eyibil has also made four appearances for Germany Under-18s and has already been dubbed by some as the ‘new Mesut Ozil’.
He plays in a similar position, is also left-footed and shares Turkish descent with the Arsenal man.
Villa, who could see Eyibil as a potential replacement for Jack Grealish if he ends up leaving this summer, are not the only club interested in signing the youngster, according to the report.
West Bromwich Albion are also rumoured to be interested with Newcastle United among clubs to have previously been mentioned as keen admirers.
As reported Villa target Eyibil has just one year left on his contract, he could be available for a cut-price fee with Mainz unlikely to want to risk him leaving for nothing next summer.
With no progress being made in talks over a new contract, he seems set to leave the club with any number of potential suitors interested.
Turkish Football claims that Super Lig teams are also monitoring Eyibil’s situation, along with Villa, but his preference is a move to England and the Premier League.
If that is the case, one of Villa or West Brom will soon be out of the running as they meet in the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs.
West Ham United are also mentioned in the report as another English club along with Villa who have scouted Eyibil.
