John Terry is set to sign a deal to join Spartak Moscow according to reports in the press, and Aston Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.
The former Chelsea and England star played for the Villans last term, and was a crucial part of them making it all the way to the Championship play-off final, which ultimately ended up in disappointment when they lost 1-0 to Fulham.
Steve Bruce has made no secret of the fact that he wanted to keep the central defender at Villa Park, but that was not possible in the aftermath of the Wembley defeat due to Villa falling into financial difficulties.
With the purse strings having to be tightened at the Birmingham based club, the only transfer activity early on in the summer was players leaving to balance the books, and Terry was one of those.
Villa were eventually taken over in preseason but the new owners made it clear that they wanted to invest in younger players who would preserve their future, which meant that Bruce was unable to pursue a move for the veteran defender.
There was a stage in the summer when Terry was said to be considering retiring, but that no longer appears to be the case as he is said to have undergone a medical ahead of joining the Russian giants, in a deal which could earn him as much as £1.8 million.
That news will come as a blow to Bruce who has a shortage of central defensive options at his disposal, as he looks to get Villa back in the Premier League over the course of this campaign.
That outcome is no better for the Villans fans who are desperate to see their club return to the top flight. They have been reacting to Terry’s impending move on social media.
Here are some of their messages:
Will be gutted if Terry signs for Spartak. Would hardly blame him though if they’re paying silly money that we could not match #AVFC

I can't get my head around why these quotes of Terry saying there is unfinished business & him voting in the poll he'd come back, then out of the blue he's going to Russia. I think he wanted to but never had an offer. Bruce has left us with a defensive mess, could cost us. #AVFC

Find the Terry to Russia thing a bit odd. Blow to Villa. Onto James Collins then. Not sure whether to shudder or be grateful. Probably still better than what we have though. #avfc

Very disappointed that it looks John Terry isn’t coming back. Would have really boosted our chances. It’s going to be a tough season unless Jedi and Chester form a strong partnership soon. I’m not hopeful of that either but let’s see. #avfc

The slight hope we might have got Terry back has now vanished, this defence actually scares me 😥 #avfc

I thought another season for Terry at Villa would have been good for both of us, so sad to hear he's not coming back. Still we need someone to strengthen the back, and the choices are not great #AVFC
