Aston Villa returned from the international break on Saturday evening but dropped two more points when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Things could have been much worse for the Villans had it not been for an injury time equaliser by Conor Hourihane which spared their blushes.

In a lacklustre performance in which Villa were largely second best throughout, Steve Bruce was thankful for his second half substitute for rescuing a point with an amazing free kick as time was running out.

The Villans boss went into the match under big pressure with his side having faltered in the early stages of the season, and this outcome did little to ease that.

Villa fell behind on 76 minutes when the exciting Bradley Dack opened the scoring for Rovers, and that prompted Bruce to act as he sent Hourihane on along with Yannick Bolasie in a bid to rescue something from the game.

The double substitution finally had the desired effect deep into injury time when the Republic of Ireland international curled a sublime free kick around the wall and into the corner, to send the many Villans fans behind the goal wild.

The result left the Birmingham-based side in the middle of the Championship table and clinging on to a place in the top half.

After the match the Villa fans took to social media to react to what they had seen, and to praise the midfielder for the impact he had on the Ewood Park stalemate.

Many of them were full of compliments for the role he played in getting the point, and want to see him feature from the start when their side host Rotherham United in their next outing on Tuesday evening.
