Aston Villa rescued a late 2-2 draw with Brentford on Wednesday evening at Villa Park and fans were pleased with the performance of one of their newest recruits on social media.
The Villans’ late heroics mean Steve Bruce’s side remain unbeaten in the Championship and sit in fifth place as they look to mount another serious charge for Premier League football next season.
Things did not get off to the best start for the home side when Neal Maupay found the back of the net, however, Jonathan Kodjia managed to level the tie up before the half-time whistle.
The Brentford forward then netted his second of the game with less than ten minutes left to play, however, Villa had other ideas about what the end result would be.
Kodjia, who has been in fine form for the club following a terrible injury setback, came up with the goods when he headed home deep into stoppage time to ensure Bruce’s side would get at least a point against the Bees.
Fans were understandably delighted with the performance of the Ivorian on social media, however, one other man appeared to get a number of plaudits.
Supporters took to Twitter to praise Orjan Nyland for his display in goal, with many feeling the goalkeeper made a number of crucial saves during the game to keep them in with a chance of stealing a point.
The 27-year-old, who joined from Ingolstadt this summer, had been the subject of criticism from some fans on social media for recent performances, however, it appears a section of the Villa faithful are prepared to give him a chance.
Here are some of their reactions:
Lovely effort from the boys tonight! Really enjoyed a good game of football, fair play to Nyland, made some good saves, hope that’ll boost his confidence. We’ve been begging for a performance like that with the ball for a long time so no real complaints. Roll on Saturday #AVFC

Decent performance generally tonight. Sloppy goals but much better team performance. Big plus tonight was Kodjia’s game, looked the threat of old. Big save from Nyland at 2-1. Deserved 3 but a decent point on reflection. #AVFC

Axel and Nyland class, need Bruce to sort his setup out and with the new comings we could have a good season on our hands

Also thought Nyland looked more settled. Couple of good saves, better distribution and generally did the standard stuff competently. He’ll be fine. #avfc

Another positive I'd like to chuck out there, seeing as though many have knocked him already, I thought Nyland had a fairly solid game, kept us in it at times, some excellent saves, more steady on the ball, can see the improvement, just needs confidence in himself & back 4. #AVFC

I felt during the game that Steve had done his 'man managing' thing and whipped our lot up into a frenzy – which is fine. But their lot held their shape, stayed organised, linked up, and could have scored four or five. Can't believe some folk are blaming Nyland – he did heroics

Plus points Nyland, McGinn, Tuanzebe, Albert and of course Kodja, who now looks like his old self #avfc

Absolutely. Excited by the new signings but need to get a defence together and keep some clean sheets. Nyland kept us in the game tonight. Onwards and upwards #avfc
