Aston Villa have missed out on signing Brentford striker Neil Maupay, with the attacker set to join fellow Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion later this week, according to TalkSport.
The Villans are desperately looking to improve their forward options ahead of their season opener away at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening, having lost the services of Tammy Abraham, the loan star whose goals were so pivotal in the Birmingham based side achieving promotion last term.
He is staying at Chelsea under Frank Lampard, which leaves Villa with only new signing Wesley, Scott Hogan and Jonathan Kodjia as players they can genuinely utilise through the middle.
One of the men the Villans were lining up to bring in was Brentford striker Maupay, a man their boss Dean Smith knows all about having signed him while he was in charge at Griffin Park.
The 22-year-old was one of the highest scorers in the Championship last season, notching 25 times in 43 league appearances for the Bees, something Villa knew all about having come up against him on a couple of occasions.
Maupay was left out of the Brentford side which got their new campaign underway at home to Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon, amid talk that his exit was getting ever closer, and unfortunately for Villa, it isn’t up the M6 that the Frenchman will travel, but instead south to the Amex Stadium.
Brighton have already broken their transfer record twice under new boss Graham Potter, and this deal will smash it for a third time this summer, as the Seagulls manager looks to strengthen his ranks for a first crack at Premier League management.
That all leaves Smith having to look elsewhere for reinforcements to his attacking unit at Villa, to add to the 11 signings he has already brought into Villa Park this summer, ahead of the window slamming shut on Thursday.
