Not everyone will be aware that Arsenal rejected the opportunity to bring Denis Suarez to the North London club 12 months ago, as reported by Football London.
The decision was reversed this season, and he spent an interesting six months with the Premier League side that proved they were right to leave him alone the first time, as bonusbets.com reveals.
Although Suarez has been at Arsenal for the last six months, it really was a case of if you blink, you will miss him.
An injury-plagued season and a lack of time on the pitch meant the player had virtually no impact and will go down as one of Arsenal’s worst signings in recent memory.
It is safe to say fans are relieved that although he cost them a lot of money, he was only on loan and as such he will return to Barcelona this summer.
The player was keen to get experience in the Premier League but then-manager Arsene Wenger reportedly did not see the potential.
It was his view that Suarez could not have an impact on the Arsenal team, so he opted against a loan move last season – a move perhaps Unai Emery now wishes he made too.
Instead, Raul Sanllehi, the head of football, decided that this was the year they would give the player a shot.
It seems he was not a popular prospect generally as both Brighton and Southampton were offered the loan deal and rejected it, according to the report.
So for the latter half of the 2017/18 season, he remained at Camp Nou – there are plenty of Arsenal fans who wish he had stayed there.
Such a lack of fitness leading to him not being available may well have been a very lucky escape for the other two teams, who do not have quite as many first-rate players to use as Arsenal does.
Suarez’s first injury came soon after the loan contract was signed.
When he was fit enough to play, he was never in the starting line-up but instead made a total of six appearances as a substitute and was only on the pitch for a total of 95 minutes.
He did not score any goals or make an assist, leading to fans being glad that Arsenal are now sending him back to parent club Barcelona.
In a tweet, right before the last couple of games, he confirmed that he was not fit to play, which left fans furious at the player.
“Some issues with my groin have made things tough since the game against BATE Borisov in the Europa League…now they have forced me to stop training altogether.
“After various medical consultations, the conclusion has been reached that I cannot keep on pushing it and I have started a period of treatment that cannot be done alongside competitive football.”
Arsenal fans will hope that their summer recruitment will be more successful, with the Suarez experiment clearly one that has failed.
