Former Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery has emerged as the unexpected favourite to land the vacant Arsenal job, according to The Guardian, and Gunners fans have been giving their reaction on Twitter – with mixed views about the pending appointment.

The 46-year-old, a three-time Europa League winner with Sevilla, has held talks with the club and he looks to have moved ahead of Mikel Arteta as their choice.

The Gunners were apparently poised to gamble and give their former player his first big managerial break but Emery appears to have changed their minds.

His experience at Sevilla and PSG, where he won all three domestic competitions in France, could see him appointed as Arsene Wenger’s successor before the end of the week.

After a season in which Arsenal failed to win a trophy and missed out on Champions League qualification, there are mixed views from the fans about Emery’s potential arrival.

While some fans are keen to get behind him, others are waiting to see exactly what happens in the coming days.

Emery is a proven winner and has tasted success in France and Spain; managing PSG to victory goes some way to show he would not be daunted by the prospect of taking on the Arsenal job.

However, he does not speak English and some fans are concerned that he has tended to spend short spells at clubs during his career.

At 46, however, he is the same age as Wenger was when he was appointed and has won twice as many trophies as the Frenchman had when he took over at Arsenal.

Fans are expressing their concerns on Twitter, with some feeling that Manuel Pellegrini – the new West Ham United boss – would have been a better choice.

However, plenty of others are imploring their fellow supporters to get behind the new man – regardless of those reservations.

And naturally enough, there are those who took the opportunity to see the funny side.
