Mohamed Elneny putting pen to paper on a new deal at Arsenal has brought a mixed reaction from the Emirates Stadium faithful on Twitter.
The 25-year-old, who has made 65 appearances for the club since joining from Basel in 2016, extended his stay with the Gunners until 2022 on Monday.
Officially we will be together for a longer time, in order to reach what we started, and to put arsenal in it's deserved spot In Europe and the whole world#WeAreArsenal ♥️♥️#WeAreGunners 💪🏼💪🏼 pic.twitter.com/1Sg8JzVhmt

The Egyptian midfielder has established himself as a reliable squad member in north London and has been an important figure in Arsene Wenger’s set up.
Elneny has featured for Arsenal in every one of their Europa League outings so far this season and will be expected to keep his place for the upcoming two-legged quarter-final tie with CSKA Moscow next month.
Primarily, the El Mokawloon academy graduate is utilised in the engine room by his French manager; however, the 68-year-old revealed after his player’s two-year extension that the Gunners’ January Player of the Month’s future will also include playing a part in the defensive line.
“He had a good pre-season, he absorbed a huge quantity of work, and he takes advantage of it now, so it’s down to where he is needed”, Wenger told the club’s official website.
“I will use him as a central defender in a three or in midfield.
“He is a fantastic team player and he is a credit to your country if you are Egyptian. He is a fantastic boy, we love him here.
“It took him some time to adapt to the intensity of the games and I think he was not aggressive enough for the Premier League [initially].
“But now he has added that to his game. People forget that Elneny is 25 years old.
“He is not 30 – he’s still a young player and his best years are in front of him.”
But despite Wenger oozing delight after securing the Egypt international until the end of the 2022 campaign, the opinion from Arsenal fans on Twitter after hearing the news was very much mixed.
Here are some of the best tweets:
I'm sorry but Elneny signing a contract doesn't interest me at all he's very average and shouldn't be at Arsenal. Just my opinion.

For every Vieira you need a Grimandi. If only Elneny had a Vieira to understudy! He is a decent squad player and as long as that is his role, that’s fine. He also has a value and we keep losing players for free, so new contact makes sense.

Imagine giving Elneny a new contract. Arsenal 0 ambition

Arsenal are on the verge of letting Jack Wilshere leave on a free transfer.
Meanwhile they have tied down Mohamed Elneny to a long term contract…
"Wenger knows" 🤔

Mohamed Elneny has a 93.1% passing accuracy in the PL since 2015/16, a higher percentage than any other player in the league (minimum 20 games started) but haters would have you believe he's not worthy of playing for us.#Arsenal #AFC

We once had Vieira, Petit, Gilberto, Edu, Cesc, now Some Arsenal fans are happy we’ve signed up Elneny again.
Go fucking slap yourself round the face with a wet, smelly fish.
This is why we’re bang average.

I like Elneny but signing this level of player is the reason why we’re 6th and nearly 40 points off 1st place.

Happy to hear that Elneny has extended his contract with the club. Doesn’t try anything fancy but gets the job done. Always gives 110% and is extremely versatile too. Hopefully it’s a successful period for both the club and him personally.

Deserved new deal for Elneny. Been a rare positive in a dismal season. Should have played more in truth given his performances when he has featured. Important squad player.

Elneny isn’t a world beater but we’re never going to have a squad full of elite players. He’s a decent, versatile option, great for the squad. Don’t get why anybody would be annoyed about him extending.

People who are abusing Elneny need to understand that he is a squad player and a very good one too. We need players who play for the club, he is one of them.
Others clubs spend 30-35 million for squad players (Drinkwater,Bernardo etc).
