Mohamed Elneny putting pen to paper on a new deal at Arsenal has brought a mixed reaction from the Emirates Stadium faithful on Twitter.

The 25-year-old, who has made 65 appearances for the club since joining from Basel in 2016, extended his stay with the Gunners until 2022 on Monday.

The Egyptian midfielder has established himself as a reliable squad member in north London and has been an important figure in Arsene Wenger’s set up.

Elneny has featured for Arsenal in every one of their Europa League outings so far this season and will be expected to keep his place for the upcoming two-legged quarter-final tie with CSKA Moscow next month.

Primarily, the El Mokawloon academy graduate is utilised in the engine room by his French manager; however, the 68-year-old revealed after his player’s two-year extension that the Gunners’ January Player of the Month’s future will also include playing a part in the defensive line.

“He had a good pre-season, he absorbed a huge quantity of work, and he takes advantage of it now, so it’s down to where he is needed”, Wenger told the club’s official website.

“I will use him as a central defender in a three or in midfield.

“He is a fantastic team player and he is a credit to your country if you are Egyptian. He is a fantastic boy, we love him here.

“It took him some time to adapt to the intensity of the games and I think he was not aggressive enough for the Premier League [initially].

“But now he has added that to his game. People forget that Elneny is 25 years old.

“He is not 30 – he’s still a young player and his best years are in front of him.”

But despite Wenger oozing delight after securing the Egypt international until the end of the 2022 campaign, the opinion from Arsenal fans on Twitter after hearing the news was very much mixed.
