Aston Villa booked their place in the Championship play-off final for the second season in succession on Tuesday evening, and after they saw off West Bromwich Albion on penalties, their fans were quick to salute their star of the show on social media.
The Villans took a 2-1 lead into the clash at The Hawthorns and were heavily expected to win the tie, but few might have expected the lengthy struggle they had in eventually doing so.
Villa actually started the second leg quite brightly, but found the Baggies a tough nut to crack as they sought about getting the goal which would probably have put the game beyond their hosts.
As it was, the Villans were pulled back in the tie in the first half when Craig Dawson rose high in the penalty box to head Albion level on aggregate, and set up a barnstormer of a night of football.
Villa went about regaining their advantage, and proceedings looked to be heading back in their favour when Baggies captain Chris Brunt was sent off 10 minutes from full time.
Dean Smith’s side could not capitalise on that however, and as chances came and went for the Villans in extra time, the inevitable penalty shootout came about.
Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer made sure he was the hero on the evening by saving the first two West Brom penalties, and although the Birmingham based side had a wobble towards the end of the scheduled spot kicks, they eventually sealed their spot at Wembley.
This was quite some turnaround for the Villans’ stopper, who earlier in the campaign was sent out on loan to Charlton Athletic, before being recalled due to injury.
He forced his way into Smith’s plans and will now head to Wembley a hero, as saluted by a number of Villa fans on social media after an emotional night.
Here are some of their messages:
All about Jed Steer, absolute legend. Tough two games but we deserved it in the end. Credit to the Baggies, completely stopped us playing tonight. A lot to work on before Wembley but thrilled to get there again! #vtid #avfc #efl #playoffs

That was not an easy watch, it was a horrible watch infact just glad to get through it. Some players not at their best tonight but got through it. Jed Steer was our Hero tonight, to think the money we've wasted on GKs this year aswell and he stepped up. Next stop Wembley. #avfc

A word for Jed Steer, shoved out by the club on loan several times. Keeper after keeper bought in as he's deemed not good enough (without a chance really) and he takes us to Wembley 👊🏻💜💙 #avfc

#AVFC were far from our best & Baggies were hard to break down all night. But we've grafted through a really tough night & we're off to Wembley 🎉🙌 Big shout out to Jed Steer for his huge moments in this playoff semi. Now Villa, let's exorcise last year's Wembley demons.
