Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Empoli midfielder Miha Zajc in recent weeks and his agent has confirmed there has been interest from two Premier League clubs.
Huddersfield Town are also interested in the Slovenia international and CalcioMercato understands that a fee of £5.4million would be enough to prise the 24-year-old away from the Stadio Carlo Castellani.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez wants to strengthen his squad with his side sitting in 15th place in the Premier League, but he believes it would be a ‘miracle’ if the Magpies survive relegation if he is not able to bring in new players.
The situation at St James’ Park is up in the air as owner Mike Ashley continues to look to sell the club and he had hoped to have sold the Toon before the opening of the January transfer window.
Newcastle fans are not hopeful that Benitez will be given funds to enhance his squad but Zajc’s agent has confirmed that there has been two Premier League clubs contact him in recent weeks about his client.
“It is true that at least two Premier League clubs have shown interest in Miha,” his agent told TuttoMercatoWeb. “The profile of a player like him in England is increasingly sought after.
“It brings unconventional solutions and added value to the team. In my opinion, the speed with which Miha perceives football is ideal for the Premier League. But the market has just begun.”
The playmaker played an important role last season for Empoli, scoring eight goals and providing 13 assists, as the Azzurri bounced back to the Italian top flight at the first attempt by winning Serie B.
Zajc has played 18 times in the Serie A this campaign, finding the back of the net twice and setting up a further three, but it appears his club may be willing to sell this month for the right price.
Newcastle face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before travelling to Ewood Park for an FA Cup replay with Blackburn Rovers three days later.
