The signing of 25-year-old Borna Barisic by to Rangers is proving to be a successful piece of business already, if his league debut against St Mirren is anything to go by.
The Gers summer addition could be described as a three-in-one player due to the fact that he can play on the left-side of a back three.
Barisic is equally comfortable playing at left-back, and if that’s not enough, he would be a terrific left-wing-back, by always being in the right place at the right time.
The ex-captain of Osijek is a versatile 6’ 1” player who already has three caps for the Croatia national team.
In May the Rangers man was in their 32-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but unfortunately, he didn’t make the final 23.
Barisic times his runs to perfection and his crossing is extremely accurate, and by signing for Rangers, he is hoping to fight his way back into the international squad again.
The first time I saw him play for Osijek against Rangers in Croatia, I couldn’t believe how good he was.
I was impressed and wrote an article to say why the ‘Gers should try to sign him.
Barisic’s natural ability was evident as he stood out as the danger man. He attacked the Light Blues throughout the 90 minutes with his passing and crossing ability.
Gerrard pointed out the defender’s talent to James Tavernier before the match, and spelt out the danger he would cause, due to his ability to deliver that end product with the devastating use of his final ball towards his forwards.
Thankfully with such skills, he has joined Rangers.
In Croatia, Barisix at times outclassed Tavernier. The Rangers right-back was ordered to defend more and not to wander up field against such a dangerous opponent.
His job was to prevent the brilliant crosses, but such was Barisic’s talent that Tavernier couldn’t stop them all.
The fact that young Croatian Katic also plays in the back three or four will help his compatriot to settle quickly with Rangers.
Another good reason for signing a Croatian star on a-four-year-deal is the price you can buy real quality for.
At only £1.5m he will become a genuine bargain as his reputation rises dramatically playing for Rangers.
